amaxomania: A compulsion to be in vehicles of all kinds either as a driver or a passenger.

amaxophobia, hamaxophobia: An excessive fear of being in, meeting in, driving in, or riding in certain kinds of vehicles; or of vehicles in general. This phobia could be part of a fear of motion or a fear of being in an enclosed place; and it may even relate to being away from a safe place (such as one's home) or a fear of losing emotional or psychological control in front of others.

ambiguphobia: A fear of being misunderstood.

ambulomania: An abnormal desire to go for extended walks at every opportunity.

ambulophobia: An excessive fear of walking.

amenomania, amoenomania: 1. Delusions of pleasant thoughts and agreeable hallucinations; a form of monomania. 2. A mania characterized by cheerfulness, gaiety, etc.

Americamania, Americomania: A craze for things that are American; an excessive desire to have American styles, food, culture, etc.

Americaphobia, Americophobia: An extreme fear and hatred for things that are American; a radical desire to destroy America's cultural influence; especially, in other countries.

amnesiophobia: An abnormal fear of having amnesia or loss of memory. This fear is now commonly related to the development of Alzheimer's disease. There are two basic types of amnesia that people fear: 1. The inability to form new memories in which the individual either does not consolidate what is perceived into permanent memory storage or can not retrieve recent memories. 2. The loss of memory of events that occurred before the memory disturbance began.
There are those who have a fear of forgetting or of having amnesia.

amychophobia, amyctophobia: An excessive fear of being lacerated, scratched, or clawed; particularly, by cats, dogs, puppies, and kittens. For those who have severe allergic reactions to animal scratches, animal hair, or fleas, the fear is justified.

anablepophobia: An excessive fear of looking up at high places. These phobics avoid looking up at the tops of tall buildings in cities and at the tops of mountains while in the country. A phobic of heights becomes overwhelmingly uncomfortable and fearful, sometimes having symptoms associated with panic attacks; such as, palpitations, sweating, dizziness, and difficulty in breathing.

andromania: Another term for nymphomania; an excessive sexual desire by women for men.

androphobia: A morbid fear or hatred of men, usually by women, that may be caused by unpleasant experiences with certain men or because of some particular characteristics of men.
Woman wants to get rid of the man in manicurist.
This woman wants to do away with
the "man" in "manicurist".


androphonomania: An obsolete term for homicidal insanity.

anemomania: An obsessive desire to have "fresh" air in which a person is always leaving windows open; sometimes, despite cold conditions.

anemophobia, ancraophobia: 1. An abnormal fear of drafts, cyclones, winds, hurricanes, etc. Some phobics have such fears when the weather changes; such as, when dark clouds appear or at times when they can hear the wind. This phobia may be related to anxiety of motion, whirlpools, or of waves. 2. In biology, intolerance of exposure to wind.

anginaphobia, anginophobia, angionophobia: An extreme anxiety of choking or painful constriction around the heart; heart attack; narrowness; angina pectoris, or related heart problems.

Angina pectoris is not a sharp pain, but rather a sensation of pressure, squeezing, or tightness. It usually starts in the center of the chest under the breastbone (sternum) and radiates to the throat area.

The first time a person has uncomplicated angina pectoris, he or she may fear that a fatal heart attack is occurring. The victim may become extremely anxious and even have a panic attack that will aggravate the chest pains.


Anglomania: An excessive admiration of English customs, etc.

Anglophobia: Fear or hatred of England and all things that are English; such as, the English language and things relating to English culture.

angrophobia: Fear of anger or of becoming angry.

Anger is a symptom, a way of cloaking
and expressing feelings too awful
to experience directly:
hurt, bitterness, grief
and, most of all,
fear.

animals (wild): agrizoomania, agrizoophobia

ankylophobia: Fear of the immobility of a joint or that a joint will get stuck in place; such as, the knee and/or ankle joints when walking or running.

anopheliphobia: An abnormal fear or hatred of mosquitoes (especially malarial mosquitoes).

anthomania: An extravagant passion or desire for having flowers.
